More Power to You

Bekah helped me make mashed potatoes last night. She has watched me do it several times and wanted to help. I peeled and sliced the potatoes and put them on to boil, but when the time came to cream them, I called on her. She has seen me mash them by hand before, but last night, I let her use the electric mixer to beat them. You should have seen how much she enjoyed that mixer, especially when we finally jacked it up to high speed. Fortunately, no potatoes were strewn about the counter in the process. Had she tried to mash them manually with a spoon or even a potato masher, she would not have gotten the job done. Bekah experienced the joy and ease of the ancient axiom, "the right tool for the right job."

I fear that too many times we do not follow the same simple axiom in our spiritual lives. We face the issues of our lives, our families, our jobs, our churches with only our human perspectives, understandings, and resources. Make no mistake about it, we have some good tools in our own tool belt – knowledge, technology, skill, finances, experiences, and such as these; but our tools pale in comparison to the power of God that He makes available to us on a daily basis.

We manipulate, but He orchestrates. We strive, but He decrees. We reason, but He knows.

How long will we continue to try to solve our problems with our own tools? How long will we continue to try to mash the potatoes of our lives with our own hand-held gadgets? When will we take up God's power tools – prayer, the Word, faith, wisdom – and watch as He accomplishes so much more in our lives than we could ever dream?

Friends, let me challenge you to begin today seeing your life through spiritual eyes and stop trying to accomplish heaven's business with earth's tools.

For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds. – 2 Corinthians 10:4

Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. – Philippians 4:6

Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths. – Proverbs 3:5-6

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. – James 1:5

Jim..you are so right! Having the right tools (God's tools) means the difference between just getting the job done and getting the job done with confidence and peace of mind! Only He can show us how to do that.
